CASE STUDY

CASE STUDY: SOLUTION FOR OIL SPILL CLEAN-UP AND ENVIRONMENTAL REMEDIATION – NIGER DELTA OIL SPILL DISASTER, NIGERIA, WEST AFRICA.

Oil spillage and other forms of environmental degradation of the Niger Delta region of Nigeria is as old as when the first oil well was drilled in 1956 by Shell Darcy in a small fishing community known as Oloibiri, Bayelsa state. It has now grown into monstrous proportions leading to the following consequences:

Bodo Community, Nigeria: 55-year-old pipeline owned by Shell burst twice spilling 600,000 barrels of crude between 2008 and 2009. The representatives of the community obtained judgement and 55M pounds sterling was awarded for remediation.

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) issued a report in 2011 which called for immediate remediation and has an arrangement with Shell and other Oil Majors to fund the clean up exercise with a budget of $1Billion.

It is estimated that while the European experienced as a whole region experienced 10 incidences of oil spills in 40 years as at 2022, Nigeria recorded 9,343 cases within 10 years.

An assessment of the remediation jobs executed under the watch of HYPREP (the government agency in charge) have been adjudged to score very low, according to the UNEP.

Observers of the clean up and remediation jobs have stated that secondary contamination caused by poor practices by the contactors engaged through indiscriminate dumping/disposal of wastes continues to be a major challenge.

Studies show that for total remediation to be achieved, huge resources and smart technologies are needed within a 30-year time frame.

We at Harvard International Clearing House Limited are strategically placed to collaborate with governments, oil majors, environmental regulators and all stakeholders concerned, to introduce a revolutionary technology that can clean up all oil spills, offtake the wastes and recycle it through a proprietary technology to produce high grade crude oil and other valuable by-products.
